Blondes have more fun…*and* make more money?

Reese-Witherspoon-blonde-hairA beauty study from England of 3000 professional women finds that blonde women bring home an average of £600 (about $1000) more a year than brunettes or redheads.

Meanwhile, according to the study (not done by a university, admittedly, but by a drugstore called Superdrug), brunettes are most likely to stay at a job long-term, redheads are more likely to change jobs in search of a better position or higher salary, and blondes placed the most emphasis on good client relationships.

Although this study might be complete malarky, in a way, it makes sense to us: blondes and redheads are less common in the population than brunettes, so many women with blonde and red hair have voluntarily chosen their new color. Perhaps women who choose to go red (the least common color) are the most novelty-seeking, whereas women who choose to go blonde (knowing the old stereotype that blondes have more fun) are looking for the most attention-grabbing color, and are thus more interested in what people think of them. Anybody?

Simon Comins, director of toiletries at Superdrug (what a title!) says: “This research just underlines that hair colour can have a dramatic effect on your life. We know our customers are constantly looking for inspiration when it comes to their hair…While blonde is a perennial favourite next year we are predicting the rise of the Brunette Bombshell as customers aim to emulate the classic refined style of Kate Middleton.”

Get Your Beauty Sleep!

Left: Sleep-deprived patient; Right: Well-rested patient

It’s hardly surprising: more sleep equals better looks.

Researchers at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden photographed 23 men and women ages 18 to 31 after they’d slept for eight hours. Then, according to CNN, they “repeated the process, except this time the researchers kept the volunteers up for 31 hours straight after allowing them to sleep for just five hours the previous night. (For both snapshots, participants were instructed to wear no makeup, keep their hair loose, and perform the same grooming beforehand.)”

The results? The sleep-deprived people were judged to look 19% more tired, 6% less healthy, and 4% less attractive. When you’re in a deep sleep, researchers explained, you secrete human-growth hormone (HGH), which helps the body repair itself and is thought to promote a more attractive (certainly more rested) appearance.

So, no guilt necessary: you need your ZZZZ’s!

How long should you wait to shampoo after coloring hair?

How long should you wait to shampoo after coloring your hair?

Somebody posed us that very question this weekend, so we asked LiQWD Director of Education Michael Schuster for his take. He says:

“Some of my clients wait a full week before shampooing after a color service, but I think that’s over-kill!

“24 hours is the maximum time it would take the color to solidify. All LiQWD shampoos feature ColorLife Technology, so you could literally cleanse your hair 5 minutes after a color service and notice no difference. With other shampoos, though, I’d recommend waiting at least a day.”

Will cutting out carbs make you live longer?

Stop eating carbs and you’ll live dramatically longer? That’s the remarkable claim by a geneticist, Professor Cynthia Kenyon of the University of California, San Francisco. Professor Kenyon discovered two genes (one nicknamed the ‘Grim Reaper‘ gene; the other jokingly called the ‘Sweet Sixteen‘ gene) that are affected by caloric and carbohydrate intake.

Cutting back on both calories and carbs will turn off the ‘Grim Reaper’ gene and activate the ‘Sweet Sixteen’ one, which “boosts compounds that make sure the skin and muscle-building proteins are working properly, the immune system becomes more active to fight infection and genes that are active in cancer get turned off.” Meanwhile, carbs make your body produce more insulin, which equals a more active ‘Grim Reaper’ gene. (Read more about the study here.)

Sigh. Is a life without pasta (even a longer one) really worth it? We’re not sure!
