New hair trend: Down in front, up in back

Nobody wants to be a slave to beauty trends, but it’s fun to keep up on what the cool kids are doing so you can decide for yourself if it’s worth it. According to Glamour.com, one of the latest beauty trends is a variation on the old “half-up/half-down” look…but instead of pulling your hair up in the front, you leave that down and pull up the hair in back.

Here’s a picture of actress Heather Graham illustrating the trend, which is really just a modified version of an updo with lots of loose, face-framing tendrils. We like!

Get the look for yourself either by air-drying hair into loose waves (The Perfect Wave does the trick) and pinning up the back, or by blow drying hair and then using a large-barrel curling iron–curling hair away from the face–to create soft, fat tendrils. A little serum applied to the ends of the face-framing pieces (SLiQWD is great for these purposes) will help the tendrils appear pulled together.

The Perfect Wave: beachy hair, no crunch

One of our favorite new products is The Perfect Wave, which we’re proud of because it really does give soft, touchable waves without any of that sticky crunch that’s so common to wave/surf creams. Beauty writer Shannon Nelson agrees. We love this review she posted on her site A Girl’s Gotta Spa:

She writes, “When I first heard about LiQWD’s newest hairstyling cream, The Perfect Wave, immediately thoughts of Misquamicut Beach in Rhode Island flooded my head. Salty air, sun-kissed skin and always the unstructured waves that gave my hair that totally sexy vibe…but always with the “crunch.” You know the crunch, right? The mix of sand and surf dried amongst your tresses. Your hair would be totally magazine worthy had it not been for crunchy hair. (That would poke your eye out if you weren’t careful.)

“…I totally loved how touchably soft it was…yet still wavy. Who remembers back in the day when you would try to repeat this same beach hair look by adding in tons of AquaNet to hold the wave? If you remember that…then you will gleefully love The Perfect Wave and the texture it gives you without investing in an entire bottle of hairspray to maintain it.”

Emma Watson lands the cover of Vogue

In the beauty and fashion world, there are few bigger honors than landing the cover of Vogue. The fact that Emma Watson is the latest Vogue cover girl at the tender age of 21 is no mean feat – only a handful of other women have secured that honor so young. We’re loving these photos of Emma, shot by Mario Testino, showing a gamine look with her Mia Farrow-esque cropped hair and striking makeup. Young women often feel that they must keep their hair long, but Emma is proof that you can have short hair and still look vibrant, fresh and sexy.

There are currently two amazing exhibits taking place at LACMA in Los Angeles: Tim Burton, which just opened last week, and Elizabeth Taylor in Iran, which is in its final days and will close on June 12th.

Of course, Elizabeth is one of the great beauty icons of our time, and after her sad death in March, we’ve found ourselves mesmerized by various photos and articles remembering her. The LACMA exhibit looks particularly amazing, with photos from Elizabeth’s vacation trip to Iran in 1976 with now-famous photographer Firooz Zahedi.

Check out this video, below, of Firooz talking about his trip to Iran with Elizabeth. What a journey that must have been!

3 Tips for a Great At-Home Blow Dry

In the summer, we’d rather just air dry our hair into pretty waves…but sometimes blow drying is a necessity. Maybe you’re going to a fancy dinner, maybe it’s a child or friend’s graduation, but whatever the circumstances, there are times when you need to be as sleek and polished as possible!

Here are 3 tips for a great at-home blow dry:

1) Apply product to damp, freshly-shampooed hair. We suggest our Professional Volumizing Spray for added bounce, Professional Smoothing Catalyst + SLiQWD for sleek, smooth sheets, and The Perfect Wave for loose, gorgeous curls.

2) Make sure you have a good blow-dryer. It should be at least 1800 watts, with a nozzle to direct the air-flow (otherwise, the cuticle will get roughed up, which leads to frizz), and multiple heat settings. (Medium-hot air is good for pre-drying; hot air will help coax strands into a shape; cool air will set your style.)

3) Work through your hair one section at a time, clipping up the top near the crown and first drying the bottom, then drying the hair around your face. Taking your time is key: think about how long it takes at the salon. They make sure hair is bone dry, which helps set the style.

Once your hair is dry, you can further lock it into place and tame flyaways with a few spritzes of hairspray: our Design Professional Working Spray does the trick, and then some!
